Indianapolis, IN —Adult Programs

Description

Indy in Motion - A Walk in the Park consisted of free walking, aerobic, and strength training classes that were offered Monday through Friday at eight park locations throughout the city/county. Participants tracked their own level of participation and received monthly incentive awards if they were physically active for at least 30 minutes, four times per week. In addition to the classes, participants took part in regular health screenings – including body mass index and blood pressure checks, nutrition workshops, and health fairs. They also received information on topics such as smoking, diabetes, obesity, and other health risks. Testimonials from some participants included: weight loss of over 40 pounds, being able to stop medications due to improved health and fitness, and identification of health problems through the free health screenings. Feedback also suggested that participants are staying involved in the program, have fun, and enjoy the social aspect. In 2004, the Indy in Motion program will grow further since the mayor has chosen this program to be a focal point for health and fitness initiatives in the city of Indianapolis.
