Description
During the kickoff event of the 12-week Family Health and Fitness program, each participant was given a “passport," which included several different physical activities, and an activity log to record physical activities, which was completed and turned in at the end of the program. The adults were awarded passport points for every ten minutes of physical activity and for attending events held by a sponsor. Participants also received materials on heart-healthy eating and other health topics. At the end of the program, certificates of recognition were given to all participants that reached at least 500 points. Additional prizes included certificates for those who attended at least five sponsored activities, a six-month health club membership to the individual who achieved the most points, YMCA day passes, and a $50 gift certificate to the family that achieved the most points. Most of the participants indicated they really enjoyed the program and would be interested in participating in it again in the future.
The City Survivor Challenge II program targeted employees and focused on heart-healthy eating and physical activity. A group of 21 city employees was divided into three teams with a leader for each team. During the initial meeting, each participant received an activity log to record physical activities. Teams met weekly to weigh-in, turn in activity logs, and receive materials on healthy eating and the benefits physical activity. Every four weeks, the teams challenged each other to a game or contest. The first challenge was an obstacle course relay; the second was a volleyball match; and the third was a floor hockey game. On the last day of the program, certificates were given to the individual and team that logged the most physical activity minutes. All participants received a gift bag filled with healthy snacks.
