The Community Wellness program for adults focused on healthy eating and physical activity. Participants attended a variety of educational seminars and workshops on heart-healthy nutrition, blood pressure, cholesterol, and fitness. Participants were also provided opportunities to attend alternate wellness activities ranging from Jazzercise to self-defense. At the beginning of the program, participants received a complete fitness assessment and a cardiovascular disease risk analysis so that physical activity and nutrition plans could be individualized. Participants exercised three times per week with one-on-one instruction from a fitness specialist. At the end of the program, participants received a follow-up fitness assessment to show their progress. The program was developed with the assistance of a group of area health professionals who formed the McAllister Wellness Program Advisory Board. In addition, members of the advisory board served as resources to the participants during the program (such as by providing presentations and answering questions) as well as outside of the program (such as providing follow-up office visits when requested).
