Description
The Las Vegas Kids Kamp served children of all ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and abilities/disabilities. The camp focused on traditional day camp activities such as sports and swimming, weekly field trips, and heart-healthy eating. Each week, there were camp sessions led by local dieticians on the USDA Food Guide Pyramid, the importance of eating fruits and vegetables, and how to eat healthy in fast-food restaurants and at home. Other activities included coloring and essay contests related to heart-healthy eating. During the six-week camp session, the children learned a great deal and showed tremendous change in their eating habits.
The program ended with a field day that coincided with the Hearts N’ Parks FunFit Festival. All field events were based on food themes. They included a cucumber javelin throw, coconut bowling, grapefruit shot put, carrot hop, and potato relay. All participants cooled off with a swim in the pool. Other activities included a healthy lunch and a Hearts N’ Parks banner contest. Approximately 300 children enjoyed this fun-filled day.
