Description
Participants in the Women’s Strength Training Fitness class learned about the lifelong benefits of weight training and conditioning, as well as about heart-healthy eating, blood pressure control, and overweight/obesity.
Participants received an orientation on the use of the exercise equipment, including proper set-up and weight training techniques for each machine. Classes then began with ten minutes of stretching and a low impact warm–up using treadmills, stationary bikes, or elliptical machines, followed by an 18-minute circuit weight training session using a combination of 18 machines. Classes ended with a cool down and a final stretch - achieving a full body workout. In addition to weight training, each week the participants received handout materials on topics such as physical activity, heart-healthy eating, blood pressure, and overweight/obesity.
At the completion of the program, participants were confident enough to use the free weight room during public open hours in an effort to maintain their fitness goals.
