Description
Bless Your Heart Child 1 was a summer playground program for children. The CATCH 4th grade curriculum book, “Taking Off,” provided at this year’s training was used to teach the children about heart-healthy eating. The lesson about “Go, Slow, and Whoa Foods” was particularly effective in teaching participants about foods and snacks to consume any time, some of the time, and least often. Other lessons focused on being active and playing outside as often as possible rather than staying in to watch TV or play video games. CATCH games were also played and were very popular.
The Bless Your Heart Child 2 program focused on physical activities and games for young children. Many of the children learned the basics of these activities for the first time and seemed to be excited about trying something new. The parents received take-home information about these new physical activities and were encouraged to do them with their families.
The city council adopted a “July is National Parks and Recreation Month” resolution during the FunFit Festival. Children and their families were encouraged to use local parks for physical activities, sports, and special events. Children did artwork that depicted why they liked to play outdoors in the parks.
