Description
Adult Hearts N' Parks programs serve participants from a wide variety of backgrounds and personal interests. Several different hiking programs as well as a mountain biking program incorporated discussions about heart-healthy eating and physical activity into the hikes and bike rides. Nutritionists and experts from the Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) led these discussions. The information helped bike riders, in particular, to better understand how lifestyle choices affect their health and riding performance.
Classes were also given by an Arizona Department of Health Services nutritionist on heart-healthy eating behaviors, and on how to incorporate physical activity into one’s lifestyle. In addition, a Phoenix Park Ranger with diabetes provided a brown bag lunch presentation about how diabetes affected his life, the importance of heart-healthy behavior, and the availability of free programs and activities that focus on heart-healthy lifestyles.
Special community events were held such as the Sunset at Papago event, which included nutrition games, hikes, a bike ride through the park, and health information. Other events where fact sheets, brochures, and heart-healthy activities were promoted included the National Public Lands Day Fair and the "Incredible Edibles Fair."
In the future, the City of Phoenix will create adaptive recreation trails so that disabled participants can use hand cycles as part of the physical activity experience.
