Roswell, NM—Youth Programs

Description

Three Hearts N’ Parks youth programs were implemented during the summer. Participants in the Summer Fun and Fitness program met every other Saturday and received presentations on fitness followed by physical activities such as group stretching, walking, jogging, or running for at least one mile. Participants also received materials, including tips on heart-healthy eating. Swim Team participants met every Monday and Wednesday for swimming practice. Materials on healthy eating and physical activity were distributed to the participants during the sessions. In addition, the children participated in discussions about the importance of healthy eating before each of the four swimming competitions held during the summer. For the Goodnight Loving Trail program, children and their parents were issued pedometers and encouraged to walk or run for 20-30 minutes, six days per week. Distances were recorded each day in an effort to reach a total of 400,000 steps - to walk the Goodnight Loving Trail. In addition, guest speakers were brought in to discuss the importance of eating a balanced diet. Families were encouraged to start each day with a healthy breakfast and to pack healthy snacks and lunches for school.
