Bloomington, IN—Youth Programs

Description

Lil' Healthy Hoosiers was a fun and interactive program to get preschoolers ready to make healthy food choices. Children and parents participated in creating healthy snack art and learning about heart-healthy foods. Participants used healthy food to make butterflies and other fun creatures. Parents learned as much as the children, if not more. After School Adventure targeted elementary school age children and focused on heart-healthy eating. Middle-school students assisted the program leader with snack preparations and facilitating some activities. The CATCH 4th grade curriculum book, “Taking Off," provided at this year’s Hearts N’ Parks training was used to teach the children about heart-healthy eating. The group especially responded to the "Go, Slow, and Whoa" session that taught the participants which foods can be consumed any time, some of the time, and least often. The children creatively acted out commercials marketing these foods. By the end of the program, participants were able to categorize their school lunches as "Go, Slow, and Whoa" foods. The children also reported the healthy food choices they were making on their own outside of the program.
