Glendale, AZ —Youth Programs

Description

Children in the Rose Lane summer program participated in activities that focused on heart-healthy eating and physical activity. The CATCH 4th grade curriculum book, “Taking Off,” was used to teach participants about "Go, Slow, and Whoa" foods – those foods that can be consumed any time, some of the time, and least often. The children also participated in "Go, Slow, and Whoa" activities, learned how to read food labels, and prepared easy, healthy snacks. Other fun activities included performing skits, making their own commercials about "Go, Slow, and Whoa" foods, and playing CATCH games. The children also learned how to count their heart rates during physical activities. A number of noticeable behavior changes occurred throughout the program: the children avoided vending machines, started teaching others how to read food labels, and gained more confidence in their knowledge and abilities. All considered, the program was a huge success and it ended with a heart-healthy party!
